So many new streamers, so many fees. Executives worry viewers will be quick to unsubscribe.
In 2015, FX network boss John Landgraf predicted that we had reached the point of “peak TV,” a television programming bubble that would soon burst, like the housing market. The idea seems so quaint now, swept up as we are in a streaming tsunami. Media and tech giants like Apple TV+ and Disney+ have joined Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, CBS All Access, and Hulu in bombarding us with more hours of television than a human could absorb even if it was their full-time job. Trust me, I should know.
We may be entering the era of churn and chase, as viewers race from platform to platform, bingeing the buzziest shows on a streaming platform and then canceling that service to move on to another.
