The biggest film of the year has endured a rocky awards season, but its cultural impact cannot be denied—a story that voters may not be able to resist recognizing in a big way.
Overall Barbie is an Oscar success, scoring an impressive eight nominations, including best picture. But the Academy’s choice to omit both Gerwig in best director and star Margot Robbie in best actress struck many observers as a kind of final-act betrayal, yanking away what precursor groups had indicated was a done deal and affirming that the film was not a serious threat to win the top prize.
Barbie’s iconic sets and modern looks both feel truly fresh for the Academy and carry a rare cultural relevance. That combination is difficult to quantify in terms of Oscar chances, keeping it in the hunt. Otherwise, Barbie has, like much of its competition, simply fallen victim to an incredibly strong year. Gerwig missed out in favor of international breakout directors like Justine Triet and Jonathan Glazer, who have an advantage with the arty directors’ branch.
