Sunday’s event launched the local Send a Heart to Turkey campaign, which encourages sending earthquake survivors messages on a paper heart.
People with Turkish backgrounds and their supporters came together with music Sunday at the Royal British Columbia Museum, acknowledging the deadly Feb. 6 earthquake in Turkey and western Syria that killed tens of thousands and left many more homeless.
Sunday’s event in the museum’s Clifford Hall launched the local Send a Heart to Turkey campaign, which encourages sending earthquake survivors messages on a paper heart. Traditional instruments like the seven-stringed baglama and the darbuka, a drum, were used to play folk, classical and modern selections.
“It hit them really hard,” she said. “Even if they survived they lost their computers and all the things that they need.”
