While camp gave my father the opportunity to fit in, my early camp experience taught me what it felt like not to fit in at all, Stephanie Levitz writes.
OTTAWA — When my father was a kid, his parents would pack up his belongings to be shipped from his home in Newfoundland to a summer camp nearly 1,000 kilometres away in Nova Scotia.
What I didn’t have? Fancy towels. And that first summer I nearly died from childhood embarrassment seeing my old faded bath towels on the cabin clothesline next to others’ brightly-coloured beach ones. We were part of a shared history. It’s an intangible point of commonality, but easily seen in real time on Visiting Day. My dad, thrilled as he was to see me and my sister, would make a beeline for his own camp friends whose kids were there now too. Together, they’d regale us with their stories over deli sandwiches and Cokes at the picnic tables.
