Spurred by high winds and scorching heat, California's Mill Fire burned through tinder-dry grass and timber with alarming speed in Siskiyou County on Friday.
Evacuees described heavy smoke and chunks of ash raining down.
Annie Peterson said she was sitting on the porch of her home near Roseburg Forest Products, which manufactures wood veneers, when “all of a sudden we heard a big boom and all that smoke was just rolling over toward us.” Very quickly her home and about a dozen others were on fire. She said members of her church helped evacuate her and her son, who is immobile. She said the scene of smoke and flames looked like “the world was coming to an end.”a state of emergency for Siskiyou County and said a federal grant would bolster"the support needed to suppress the fire."

"Today we're looking for lighter winds," said Nelainischkies."Winds will be only up to 10 mph today. There might be some stronger gusts this afternoon but not anything like yesterday."This is a developing story and details will be added as they become available.
