Relations between China and the United States at large are fragile due to trade tensions and other issues.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom met with China's President Xi Jinping to discuss a partnership to address the climate crisis.
Last week, Newsom received criticism for his China trip's focus on climate change rather than the country's human rights violations and connection to the fentanyl crisis. After the meeting with Xi, Newsom's office said that the governor had brought up the human rights violations and the fentanyl issue.
Despite these tensions, Newsom received a friendly welcome from Chinese leaders. He emphasized that California still wants to work with China on climate strategy even with strains taking place at the national level.
