Autopilot is a driver assist, not some kind of self-driving feature. California's DMV wants Tesla to be clearer about that.

is lying to you about the capabilities of its Autopilot driver assistance feature—namely, by not properly framing how it is anfeature, rather than some kind of self-driving mode. At least, that is what the California Department of Motor Vehicles is saying. According to a report from, on July 28th, the California DMV filed a complaint alleging that Tesla made"untrue or misleading" claims on its website in regards to the capabilities of the Autopilot function.

The California DMV also cites a statement on Autopilot Tesla made on its website which reads"The system is designed to be able to conduct short and long-distance trips with no action required by the person in the driver's seat.". Only Level 5—the highest level, requires absolutely no action or monitoring from any human being occupying the vehicle.

According to Tesla's own disclaimers,"Autopilot features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous." Again, in keeping with a Level 2 system. The California DMV is calling out Tesla for making contradictory statements."These advertisements are a deceptive practice," according to the DMV's complaint.
