State Attorney General Rob Bonta could face a serious challenger in November's general election. But can Anne Marie Schubert survive next month's primary?
, which is a political death knell in a state where there nearly twice as many Democrats as there are Republicans. By highlighting Early’s conservative bona fides, the group supporting Bonta is hoping Early clears the primary, which would mean an easy general victory for Bonta.
But that strategy could backfire. By propping up Early, the ads could be leeching votes from the more moderate and well-known Hochman, who has the endorsement of the California Republican Party. If enough conservative voters switch from Hochman to Early, those two could evenly split votes, which would propel Schubert to the general — something Bonta doesn't want.
“Bonta would much rather have a general election where he’s guaranteed to win rather than one where there’s a slight chance he doesn’t,” said Wesley Hussey, a political science professor at Sacramento State. “I don’t know if this tactic will work, but because this is such a low-information race, a little bit of attention might be enough to shove Early into that second spot.”

“Even though the attorney general isn’t primarily a criminal prosecutor, a lot of voters think the job is about criminal prosecution. That works to her advantage,” Pitney said. “She has a record of prominent criminal prosecutions, people are concerned about crime, and California voters have a bit of a conservative streak when it comes to crime issues.”
