Calgary preacher to remain behind bars as his lawyer looks to relax proposed bail conditions yyc
Defence counsel Ben Allison on Monday adjourned Reimer’s case to next week, so he can have discussions with prosecutors over conditions the accused refuses to sign to gain his release.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
Reimer, 36, has been in custody since his arrest last Thursday on charges of causing a disturbance and mischief in connection with events at a Reading with Royalty drag queen event at a southeast library.Police have labelled the alleged offences as hate crimes. If he were to be convicted and a judge was to agree with that assessment, it would be considered an aggravating factor in sentencing.
A justice of the peace imposed the conditions as part of a release order but Reimer refused to sign them, instead choosing to remain behind bars. According to Calgary police, officers attended the Seton Library at about 11:15 a.m. on Feb. 25 to check on a planned demonstration against the library’s Reading with Royalty drag storytime event.
The officers were called to a library classroom for reports that several people had “aggressively” entered the space and were shouting homophobic and transphobic slurs at the children and parents, Calgary police said in a news release.
