“It’s about getting people fired up and meeting other artists and see what is out there right under their noses,” Brewster says. “That is something that happens to us all the time. There are talents, there are engagements, there are facilitations that are here around our city post-COVID. They are happening all around our city and we don’t know. So this is a great artistic hub and a place to germinate and grow from.

The broad theme this year will be PeoplePuzzle: Some Assembly Required and Brewster says he has specific ideas for the four cabarets that will be held at Arts Commons in 2023 and 2024 but did not want to reveal details. Brewster became Calgary’s poet laureate in 2022 and will serve until 2024. He had previously been a finalist for the position. He has been a poet and spoken-word artist for 20 years. He was born and raised in Toronto and came to Calgary in 2006. As “artistic ambassador for the citizens of Calgary,” he performs and speaks at council meetings, convocations and other civic events.
