That is especially true at Cal State San Marcos and softball coach Stef Ewing.
“I’m an outgoing person,” Ewing said. “I like music at practice. I want my players to enjoy the game. I want my team to be aggressive. I want to make the other team uncomfortable.”And the young Cougars, who boast two redshirt juniors, a redshirt sophomore, 14 redshirt freshmen and four true freshmen, have bought in.
“There is a mutual respect between the coaches and players,” said redshirt sophomore Nikki Andelin, who has been in the program for four years. “When I got here four years ago, and Stef was in her first year, there was a disconnect between the returnees and the new players. She was given the team, so it wasn’t an inclusive atmosphere. The infielders never talked to the outfielders. The freshmen didn’t talk to the seniors.
“It was very difficult not playing these last two years,” Donnelly said. “I really found myself in high school because I always had softball. Then there was nothing, and it was rough. We had Zoom meetings and all that stuff, but we never met in person.
