The year-old union is bargaining for budget transparency and pushing back against recent layoffs they say impact some of the museum’s popular programs
Cal Academy Workers United , the year-old union representing California Academy of Sciences staff, is currently negotiating its first contract with museum leadership following staff layoffs and cuts to educational programming earlier this year.
According to the California Academy of Sciences, museum leadership took multiple cost-cutting actions over the past year to meet a budget deficit, “including reducing non-personnel expenses, not filling open positions, and pursuing new short-term revenue opportunities,” officials said in an email to The Examiner.
Museum officials said a staff reduction of 5% was required to close the financial gap and restore the institution’s financial stability, and that four employees “are proposed to be laid off and are being bargained over with the union.” While Vollman is still employed as the union continues negotiations, they have been informally reassigned to general clerical work in the museum’s education department.
“I'm not doing anything even remotely related to the job that I was hired to perform, so my job duties have changed dramatically,” they said. According to the California Academy of Sciences, the Academy is “taking time off from teacher professional development work this summer to strategize about future programming,” and the future of the Bayview Science Institute is unclear.“ worked really closely with teachers in that area to train them and how to teach science to their students, and to abandon that neighborhood is egregious,” she said.
