Classical Academy wins its first football title in its 13th year of existence, defeating Crawford, which was seeking its first crown since 1961
In the evening twilight at Escondido High on Saturday, Josiah Cruz told his Classical Academy football team the one thing it wanted to hear.That brought a roar from the Caimans as they celebrated a 33-14 Division V championship game win over Crawford.The win, the first football championship since the school started playing sports 13 years ago, sends No. 3-seeded Classical Academy to the Southern California Regionals with pairings to be announced this afternoon.
Sega, who plays both ways and prefers defense, threw for 73 yards, including a 55-yard TD pass to Life Pollard, ran for a TD, caught a 25-yard pass and recovered a fumble on defense. “At halftime, we decided to start playing as a team, and we did,” Life Pollard said. “It was a whole different mindset. We looked at each other and knew we needed to get it done. This is a really close group. We’re a small school, and we’re close on and off the field. Really, we’re brothers.”
