Guillermo del Toro gives a mixed update on Cabinet of Curiosities season 2. The horror anthology had a strong debut on Nielsen's U.S. streaming charts at the end of November, debuting in the second spot just behind Ryan Murphy's The Watcher, with more than one billion minutes viewed.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In an interview with Collider to promote his new Pinocchio film, del Toro gave an update on the future of Cabinet of Curiosities. Like a lot of producers that work with Netflix, del Toro admits that the renewal process is shrouded in mystery. But he was also candid about the fact that he has a degree of mixed feelings about the anthology.
We got the thing I published on Twitter about a billion views, or whatever that is. It is a very mysterious process to get the yes or the no. Either way is good news for me because producing eight features in one year was really, really difficult.
In terms of the ideas that he hoped to introduce in Cabinet of Curiosities season 2, the Oscar-winning del Toro revealed that he hopes to make a stop-motion animated horror episode. Both the directors mentioned, and the potential, approaches are very encouraging. Riley, in particular, is an intriguing choice.
Whether Cabinet of Curiosities season 2 happens is another question. Press releases love to highlight viewing figures that sound impressive, but they usually only paint a partial picture. With an anthology, is it enough if subscribers viewed just a few episodes to completion, or is the entire season's viewing taken into account? And how does the budget factor into Netflix's decision-making? These are all factors that are usually revealed in the event of a cancelation.
