Yet none of 80 for Brady — a whimsical look back at Super Bowl LI, the biggest league championship comeback in NFL history and a case study of just how fabulous NFL Films continues to be in the digital era of sport television and theatre — Creed III, Champions and Air are eligible to headline the sport movie class of 2022. They’ll have to cool their heels and wait until March of 2024 when they are expected to be among the big winners of the current crop of new releases.
Facing Nolan is the best sport documentary of 2022. It begins at the end of Nolan Ryan’s career and works backwards to chronicle one of the most remarkable athletes of his or any generation. It obviously appeals to baseball fans but the story of a guy in his 40s who was still able to clock pitches at 100 mph is one that matters to even casual sport fans.
Those who crave films with a political or social bent will like Swimmers, the real-life story of Yusra and Sarah Mardini, forced to swim for three hours in the open waters of the Aegean Sea while pushing a boat of 18 Syrian migrants, or Olga, the story of a Ukrainian gymnast living in exile during the Maidan Revolution.
