“There's no question that the training in the military helped along the way, helped with every aspect of this trip, both in the preparation of it, during the trip, during the tragedy that happened, and even after all the training that I received in the military was vitally important,” said Smith. “To say that we were prepared is honestly kind of an understatement; but you're never prepared for fate, for mother nature.
“I have a wife called for her husband, he was out with, hiking Buckskin Gulch,” said a Glen Canyon dispatcher. “She was expecting to hear from them last night.” “As you said, me waving at them, laying down,” said Smith, who has seen the rescue video and hoist operation. “I was giving them as big of a picture as I could give them in such a small narrow window that they could see me.”Within the next day or so, rescuers located both Watson and Romaniello. Both did not survive.
