The No. 1 overall draft pick who debuted for Washington in 2012 at age 19 quickly blossomed into a perennial all-star and was the 2015 National League MVP.
For years, his impending free agency had been one of the sport’s most discussed topics, with whispers of a record-setting contract looming from an outpost such as New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia or Chicago.
