A claim of this Russian gull at Quidi Vidi Lake at first seems preposterous. However, followers of this bird column may remember this is notThe majority of the slaty-backed gull population does what tradition has dictated over the eons. Spending the summer nesting on the Russian coast and then going south to Japan in the winter has proven to be a successful strategy for the species as a whole.
The first slaty-backed gull in Newfoundland and Labrador was found at Quidi Vidi Lake during the winter of 2006. Since then, the Russian gull has made an appearance at the lake in 12 of the last 18 winters. Over the next few days, trying to connect with the slaty-backed gull became the new game in town for the birders. There are so many gulls to look through at Quidi Vidi Lake. Each individual gull may spend only a few minutes at the lake doing their business of cleaning up and drinking fresh water before flying away.
All in all, this is natural event. There are not enough voles and mice in the woods to support the numbers of northern saw-whet owl present. Some of them will find enough food to get them through the rest of the winter.
