Some Browns free agent targets are taking shape...
Possibly the best part about Hargrave is that he played for Schwartz in Philly in 2020, and loved it. He lit up when I asked him about Schwartz during Super Bowl week, and would help implement his former coordinator’s scheme. He loves rushing the passer, and would have plenty of opportunities to do that here. A 2021 Pro Bowler, Hargrave is just a notch below the great Aaron Donald and Chris Jones.
The current Browns regime hasn’t invested heavily in a defensive tackle, but now is the time. If it’s not Hargrave, they should and likely will make every effort to land one of the top three or four tackles on the market. With safety John Johnson III set to be released March 15 when the league year opens, the Browns have the Bengals’ safety firmly in their sights. Like Hargrave, Bates is the best at his position to hit the market, and won’t come cheap.
Bates, 26, will average somewhere around $14 million a year, but again, the Browns can structure a four-year deal with lower cap numbers in the first two years. A second-team All-Pro in 2020, Bates has 18 interceptions in five seasons, including four last year when he played on the $12.911 million franchise tag. He allowed 15 catches on 30 targets for 243 according to NFL Next Gen Stats, which was third among safeties with at least 250 coverage snaps.
Bates would love to come here and play with Deshaun Watson, with whom he shares an agent in David Mulugheta. He’d also pair nicely with fourth-year pro Grant Delpit. The Browns and Ngakoue had mutual interest in 2020 when he was with the Jaguars, but he was in the midst of an agent switch and talks fizzled. Since then, he’s been traded three times, but has produced 8.0, 10.0 and 9.5 sacks with four different teams. Last season, he had the 9.
Turning 28 on March 31, Ngakoue has a market value of about $14.8 million a year over four years, according to Spotrac. He wanted to play here once before, so it might be time to revisit it.
