Pace birdies the final hole in the final group to leave the Canadian star in a tie for second.
Henderson, who won this event in 2016 for her first major triumph, shot a 4-under 67 at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J., and was tied for the opening-round lead until Lee-Anne Pace, in the final group of the day, made birdie on her final hole to get to 5 under.
The Canadian started on the back nine at the 6,600-yard Lower Course and birdied her second hole of the day, the par-4 11th. Although she bogeyed the par-4 15th, that was her only blemish. Henderson added a birdie on No. 16 and made three more after the turn, capped by a putt of about 35 feet on the par-3 9th.
Henderson is tied with Ruoning Yin and Xiyu Lin after 18 holes. Yin and Lin, both from China, are best friends and Lin is technically Yin’s landlord in Orlando. Yin, who won the L.A. Open earlier this season, is renting Lin’s old home. While Lin, Yin and Pace are looking for their first major championship win — Pace has just one top-10 finish in a major in 15 years as a pro — Henderson is a two-time major winner and has thrived at the game’s biggest tournaments of late. Since 2020, she has had the most rounds in the 60s in majors on the LPGA Tour.
