A 'beautiful' civic Christmas tree has hastily replaced a town's first sorry offering after claims of ‘Britain’s saddest Christmas tree' prompted online anger and political mud slinging.
There had followed a flood of criticisms at the weekend after the tree's arrival that it was 'abysmal' and 'horrendous'. Carol Bancroft had simply said: “Mess,” while someone else had commented: “I think everyone involved in picking the tree that would justify Accrington town have chosen extremely well …tired …broken …limp …depressing …and virtually on its knees …just like the town itself.
Yet by Monday morning, a replacement tree was spotted being lowered into place, pouring oil on the troubled waters of the smouldering Christmas controversy. Lancashire County Councillor, chairman of Lancashire County Council and member of Hyndburn Borough Council Peter Britcliffe said Monday morning, "Beautiful tree in Accrington Town Centre. Well done to all concerned for sorting this matter out.
