🔴 Bring back Covid hand washing advice to prevent more Strep A deaths, urges public health expert
A return to Covid hand washing advice will help prevent more children dying from Strep A infections, an international public health expert has said.
“As we are in the post-Covid era, maybe we’re using masks now much less frequently, so in the last two and a half years people were much less exposed and now much more susceptible to respiratory infections of different kinds.”– 13 in England and one in Northern Ireland and one in Wales – since September. There have been no deaths confirmed in Scotland.
Officials said there was no suggestion that a new strain of Strep A was circulating, and that the case fatality rate was the same as previous seasons. However, the UKHSA has said it is “concerned” by a premature spike in cases – usually seen in the spring – particularly in children under 10 and that immunity could be lower after lockdown restrictions.
Professor Davidovitch cautioned against a Government-led national public health campaign as that could lead to “mass panic”. Dr Camilla Kingdon, Dr Adrian Boyle and Professor Kamila Hawthorne said: “During any winter period colds, flus and bugs are widespread. But with the recent increase in Strep A cases, it’s no wonder that parents are very worried. We’d like to reassure parents and carers that this specific infection is both common and treatable. In fact, the majority of children will recover on their own without the need for antibiotics.
He said: “I can’t tell you about supply chain issues but my understanding is that overall we do have plenty of antibiotics. Of course, you could have a local situation where there’s a shortage, but I’m not aware of any national shortage, particularly given that this bug is treatable with one of our oldest antibiotics, penicillin, and it’s always sensitive to penicillin, so it should be perfectly treatable when it’s recognised.
