An effort to cancel the Hodgetwins in Indianapolis raised awareness of the comedy duo.

I had never heard of the Hodgetwins until a few weeks ago. Now I’m typing their name into a newspaper column.

As far as I can tell from skimming Hodgetwins content, Keith and Kevin Hodge have developed a talent for harnessing overheated political identities and extracting money from people who like trucks, patriotic swag and Fox News. Their social media output consists of memes your relatives would share and unfunny observations, such as “Ted Cruz is a legend,” which is something you might say when you’re pretending too hard to be a conservative.

In Irvington, where I live, residents launched a noisy movement to cancel a Hodgetwins performance that was scheduled for Saturday at the Irving Theater . The show wound up in Irvington after the Athenaeum called off an Aug. 6 performance over public opposition to the material. If no one had made an issue of the Hodgetwins, they would have bounced in and out of Irvington with little notice. Visiting ticket holders would have come away with a favorable view of the neighborhood, if they didn’t have one already, because Irvington is great. The best way to be a welcoming neighborhood is to actually welcome people, even if they laugh at bad jokes.
