Bridgeland got a taste of what it’s like to win a district championship in 2021-22.
“We have a lot of people that are working really hard for us – that have either been here or that are starting off – and the girls are just working really well together and they’re starting to develop such a relationship and a bond that I believe is unbreakable,” Bridgeland coach Candi Weige said. “These eight seniors have really stepped up and done a good job of leading and trying to get us back on top where I feel like we deserve to be,” Weige said.
The Bears are led by a trio of pitchers on the mound. Junior Sydney Jackson has been getting the majority of the innings with 75.1, as of March 30, to go with a 1.49 ERA and 95 strikeouts. She’s followed by senior pitcher/outfielder Haylie Stum and senior pitcher/infielder Ellen Shull, who have pitched a combined 65.2 innings.
While Stum has been a staple of the program as a four-year letterman, the two-way player is also editor-in-chief at the school paper and reports for Vype Houston. This past fall, Stum spent months covering high school football and was recently named the 2023 TAJE Texas Journalist of the Year.
