Bret Easton Ellis: ‘I love Elon Musk. I love disruptors’
Ellis is talking to me from his apartment in Los Angeles via the old-school medium of telephone after being unable to get Zoom to work. I’m pretty sure the fault is at Ellis’s end and I can tell he’s certain it’s at mine. However, once we’re up and running, despite his claims of being strong-armed into this by his publisher, he’s chatty and relaxed.
Ellis’s original publisher Simon & Schuster refused to put the book out and the president of the Los Angeles branch of the National Organisation for Women declared it “the most misogynistic communication we have ever come across”. Ellis received death threats and was effectively cancelled long before “cancel culture” was fashionable.
“When you’re young, music is such an overwhelming part of your life so if you’re writing about young people, I don’t know why you wouldn’t be dropping music in all the time” says Ellis. “And especially the Bret Ellis character inEllis’s original plan was to study music. An accomplished musician, he was in bands as a teenager and had actually considered trying to make it in the music industry.
