Breakenridge: Measured approach required on future minimum wage policies abpoli
— a report that then sat on the shelf for three years — offers a sensible approach. That report also serves as a warning about the perils of rushing through steep increases.
As the report notes, the previous approach of linking minimum wage increases to inflation made sense. It would be wise for the next government to announce a return to that policy and to give businesses a year’s advance notice before the first increase would take effect. The UCP might be open to such an approach. The intentions of the NDP, on the other hand, are harder to read.
For one, the minimum wage issue — and more specifically, the arbitrary target of $15 per hour — isn’t the same sort of rallying point for left-of-centre parties that it was eight or nine years ago. It’s also the case that the NDP has a vested interest in campaigning as a more centrist party this time around.
Furthermore, any attempts by the NDP to advocate for yet another round of aggressive minimum wage increases would simply invite further scrutiny of their record. I’m not sure they’d welcome that.
