Brazilian police arrest two ex-cops for murder of outspoken black Rio councilwoman

By Marina Lopes Marina Lopes Email Bio Follow March 12 at 10:04 AM SAO PAULO, Brazil — Brazilian authorities arrested two former police officers Tuesday in the death of an outspoken Rio de Janeiro councilwoman, a year after her assassination convulsed Latin America’s largest nation.

“Two police officers were arrested for direct and effective participation in the crime,” said Marcus Vinícius Braga, Rio de Janeiro’s state police secretary. “With these arrests, we get close to solving the crime.”She was driving home on the night of March 14, 2018, after speaking to a group of women about black empowerment when she was struck by nine police-issue bullets. Her driver, Anderson Gomes, also was killed.

Armed paramilitary groups made up of current and former police officers emerged in Rio in the early 2000s, creating an army of guns for hire. They control several neighborhoods in the city and are known for extorting residents for access to basic services, such as gas or cable, often killing those who stand in their way.
