Police say the thefts happened in recent months, starting in January, and have occurred at busy cafes and restaurants
In one video, a man could be seen strolling casually into Paul Bakery on Robson Street and taking a purse from the back of chair while the owner was occupied with two young children.
In another video, a man could be seen inside a busy Korean restaurant on Robson Street. At one point, he pretended to drop his backpack, then took a light-coloured purse at the same time he picked up his backpack. In a third video, a man could be seen sitting at a table in an upscale restaurant, taking off his jacket, then using it as a shield to steal a purse slung behind the seat of a woman seated at the next table.
Police also described another incident where the suspect stole a victim’s purse that was on the bench beside her at a busy restaurant on Robson Street. It contained a passport, ID and money.Article content Vancouver police have released a series of videos of recent purse thefts in busy downtown businesses. Investigators believe the same person is responsible for the thefts.Vancouver Police offered the following tips to prevent such thefts:• Do not leave your purse draped over the back of your chair at a restaurant or public area.• Carry keys and ID in your pocket so if your purse is stolen, thieves won’t have your house keys.
