Former Prime Minister Jean Chretien once shut up for weeks after winning a federal election, judging correctly that voters were sick of politicians.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
The federal ban on ending natural gas for electricity by 2035 is a terrible policy that threatens Alberta’s economic future. There’s wide provincial consensus on that viewpoint. Even the NDP agrees the Liberal plan is unrealistic. Domestically, the election result is not a bad thing for this divided province. We have a majority government with full power to act. But it will be checked by the largest, best-financed opposition in Alberta history., can be sure of forceful defence against any sharp rightward turn. The UCP nearly lost both big cities and could get blanked in the future if they move the wrong way.
Note to the NDP, though. Do not light your hair on fire every time Smith shows her face. The negative bombardment was relentless for months and ultimately turned sympathy to Smith.
