What an incredible story — from the peak to the pit in three years. How does that happen?
Truly bizarre was the claim by his campaigners that the revolt was a minor thing, when at the same time they bent their entire structure to defeating it.In my view the trouble started at the UCP’s founding convention in early May 2018.
The year before, Kenney had produced a “grassroots guarantee” — it was introduced with big placards that said “policies must be developed democratically by its members, not imposed by its leader.” He signed it publicly. A lot of Kenney’s critics have always said he’s a federal politician without a real sense of Alberta. I discounted this at first — he was undeniably competent and effective as a federal minister, and he was an Alberta MP after all.
Kenney can be very legalistic about these things — he likes to say the UCP has kept 90 per cent of its promises. What he doesn’t say is that a lot of the measures have been passed but never put into effect.
