Maxwell, best remembered as a first-round pick of Minnesota, was suffering from an aggressive form of lung cancer. A ‘Go Fund Me’ campaign had been started by his family this summer as the costs of his treatment had exceeded insurance. Former teammates such as Brian Bellows were contributing.Maxwell, born in Brandon, Man.
With Toronto, he had 26 points in 56 games and served as alternate team captain to Rick Vaive. He was dealt to Vancouver for a draft pick, was briefly a New York Ranger and ended back in Minnesota the same season, telling friends that last deal was the result of Stars GM Lou Nanne beating New York’s Phil Esposito in a card game. Maxwell ended with 368 regular season points and 1,292 penalty minutes.
Maxwell represented Canada in three world hockey championships. Settling down in Minnesota, he started a renovation/construction company and later headed up the Stars’ alumni association. On Facebook, Maxwell’s former fellow Leaf, defenceman Chris Kotsopoulos posted “Really sad to hear. Maxy was a pretty damn good D-man throughout his career and witty, funny, great teammate.”
