CLEVELAND, Ohio — Attempts to ban books from the nation’s libraries nearly doubled in 2022, with titles about LGBTQ and race issues the most targeted.
It’s the highest number of attempted book bans since the ALA began tracking the data more than 20 years ago. “Gender Queer,” like most of the books on the list, is a focus of bans because it’s believed by opponents to be too sexually explicit for younger readers, the ALA says. “Their aim is to suppress the voices of those traditionally excluded from our nation’s conversations, such as people in the LGBTQIA+ community or people of color.”1. “Gender Queer,” by Maia Kobabe4. “Flamer,” by Mike Curato7. “Lawn Boy,” by Jonathan Evison9. “Out of Darkness,” by Ashley Hope Perez
