Boeing announced Monday that it will be suspending operations and production at its Seattle-area facilities due to the spread of COVID-19.: Boeing is seeking to offset the financial impact of coronavirus by offering early retirement and voluntary layoffs to staff, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.
According to one source, those in the company who want to leave will be allowed to do so, with pay and benefits, while another source told Reuters that Chief Executive Dave Calhoun could inform employees of a plan on Thursday. The airline industry has been squeezed by social-distancing measures and lockdowns that have caused demand to plummet, which has had a knock-on effect on aircraft deliveries as major airlines cut back on spending.
Boeing last month said it would freeze overtime and hiring in a bid to save cash, but at the time said there were no plans to cut jobs, ReutersThe coronavirus hit comes on top of Boeing’s grounding of its 737 MAX aircraft last year, following two separate crashes in which 346 people died.
