Mike Wilner: Blue Jays give rotation a look at spring training with debut of one new starter and one new pitch
The two right-handers threw two innings each, both allowing two hits and issuing a walk. Berríos struck out a pair and Bassitt gave up a run.to come to Toronto over the winter, was more economical with his pitches, throwing only 27 to record his six outs as opposed to Berrios’ 36, but each one got in the work he needed in his first outing of spring.
“We’ve been really, really harping of late where he sets up on pitches and where we want it to be,” said Bassitt. “I feel like that’s going really, really good … we’ve got that locked in, now it’s on to the next step. It’s just a little building process, but so far it’s been great.” “I want to be more on top of the ball,” said Berríos after breaking out the new pitch in a live batting practice session late last week. “I want to keep working on it and have the same consistency with it as I have with the old one.”“Now I’ve got two curveballs going two different ways,” said the 28-year-old, whowith the Jays last off-season. “I think it’s going to help change the mindset and also the eye level .
He’ll get one more start in camp before he heads off to Miami to join Team Puerto Rico for the World Baseball Classic.The Jays got some very strong outings out of a few members of their relief corps across both games Tuesday.
