Somewhat overshadowed win, however, was the health of leadoff man George Springer, whose tenure in Toronto has been plagued by injuries. This one involved his right hand when he was hit by a pitch.
“Wait and see,’’ manager John Schneider said afterwards of Springer and a possible timeline for his return. “The off-day comes at a good time for him. We’ll see how it goes.”“He just wanted to wait and see in talking to him,’’ Schneider said. “We wanted to see if it would bother him hitting and, with the off-day, it was pretty easy to be cautious with it.”Article content
Over the past eight games, Toronto’s starters have yielded five runs over 52.1 innings, while posting an ERA of 0.87.Kikuchi was lifted after throwing only 89 pitches in 5.2 innings. He allowed only four hits and one walk while striking out eight. He’d given up a one-out single to Andrew Vaughn in the sixth, then struck out Luis Robert Jr., before Schneider replaced him with Erik Swanson.
