THUNDER BAY — For the second time this week, the presence of blue-green algae has been confirmed in a lake near Thunder Bay.
The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks received a positive test result from a water sample that was collected at Hazelwood Lake on Aug. 24.Blue-green algae blooms may produce toxins that pose a health risk to humans and animals when the water is consumed, inhaled, or comes into contact with skin.
The Thunder Bay District Health Unit advises that water should be avoided whenever a blue-green algae bloom is present, and for about two weeks after it has dissipated. Earlier this week, a bloom was confirmed at West Loon Lake after testing of a water sample that was also taken on Aug. 24.
