'There used to be about 20 homeless there - now there’s around a hundred.'
As an ice cold wind sliced through Blackpool town centre this morning, some of the town’s rough sleepers cowered in doorways under a grey sky.
“I have never been so cold in my life. If you don’t get there at five o'clock, all the toilets are occupied by homeless people.” On the streets for a decade, he came to Blackpool from his native Glasgow thirty years ago, but fell on hard times after a relationship breakdown, ending up, as he puts it, ‘in a big dark hole’ that it’s ‘impossible to get out of.’
He says people are lured to Blackpool by the bright lights and the crowds, but the streets are in no way paved with gold for people like him. “People think Blackpool is an answer to their prayers. It's probably the worst move I've ever made. It looks good as a town but it's not.” Dean, who suffers with mental health issues, has no qualms about foraging in bins to survive and would prefer to be out in the bitter cold instead of in a hostel, where feels frightened and depressed. “I feed out of the bins - I beg for food; I find it in the bins.”
“It's so cold,” he tells me. “There will be a few deaths come Christmas if they haven't got people off the streets if they haven't housed them. properly. Life in a dilapidated caravan was hard, and he felt ‘invisible.’ Unable to heat food up, with no heating,’ and ‘holes in the windows,’ he told us: “You’re invisible when you’re homeless, there are three of us living in this caravan, with no heating, no electricity, holes in the windows; some days my fingers are blue in there, I’m that cold.”
