With the opening of its brick-and-mortar book shop on the Texas Southern University campus last weekend, Houston's CLASS Bookstore strengthens a growing roster of choices for Black book lovers in Houston.
These bookstores are labors of love, both for literature and community, said SOA Co. owner Cherrelle Duncan, who, like the Landrys, works a full-time job in addition to her duties as a bookseller. Duncan said she relies on the support of family and friends to keep SOA Co. running, and views the ever-expanding network of Black-owned bookstores in the Houston area as compatriots rather than competitors.
Dozens of people filtered in and out of"The Residency's" cozy storefront during its opening weekend in early December, sipping drinks and chatting amiably as David and Dara Landry rang up purchases. Degray Dillard, 41, travelled up from Missouri City to buy a children's book for his 3-year-old son, who was playing in a children's area in the corner of the shop.
