Black Adam has been on a journey of redemption in recent comics, but as it's revealed that 31st-Century heroes the Legion of Super-Heroes want to attack him on sight, big questions are raised about whether he's truly grown past his villainous ways.

In recent months, Black Adam has been on a path of redemption as a member of the Justice League, but now DC is hinting this progress is doomed to fail. In Justice League vs Legion of Super-Heroes #1, the two venerable teams meet, with the thirty-first century heroes dropping hints that Black Adam may be close to a return to villainy. The first issue of the six-issue miniseries is on sale now in print and digital.

Black Adam began as one of Shazam’s greatest foes, a former champion of the Wizard who was corrupted by his power. Banished into the depths of space, he would return to menace Shazam and his allies in the present day. However, in the late 1990s, in the pages of Jerry Ordway’s Power of Shazam, Black Adam began to morph into an anti-hero, a thread Geoff Johns would later pick up during his run on JSA. Recently, Black Adam, at Superman’s insistence, joined the Justice League.

The scene is largely played for laughs, as the Legion stonewalls the League’s attempts to get glimpses of their future, but if fans read between the lines, hints are dropped, and Wildfire’s desire to pummel Black Adam may be a big one. It seems to fly in the face of Black Adam’s recent story arc, which is one of redemption and atonement.

There is still some hope. Future State: Suicide Squad portrayed a far, far future in which Black Adam had become one of the galaxy's final, greatest heroes, but Justice League vs Legion of Super-Heroes #1 suggests that even at best, the path from his current period of"redemption" to that moment won't be a straight line. As the name implies, Wildfire is hot-headed, and there is a possibility his desire to punch Black Adam is partly an example of his chest-beating.
