Prescription contraception will soon be free in B.C. after the province became the first in Canada to unveil the program as part of its 2023 budget. The move has groups in other provinces excited and hopeful the same will happen across the country.

In Ontario, those eligible for OHIP, including those 24 and younger who are not covered by a private plan are eligible for coverage for more than 5,000 medications including some forms of contraception covered under the Ontario Drug Benefit program.if they live in a long-term-care home or special care home, or receive benefits from Ontario Works or the Ontario Disability Support Program.

Bakhache added another caveat is those under 25 who are covered by private insurance, such as their parents or partners, won’t be eligible for the Ontario Drug Benefit and therefore may need to disclose to them if want access., a group made up of 80 volunteers and professionals from medical, legal and political backgrounds formed in the early months of the pandemic with the goal of pushing the Ontario government to provide contraception.

“We were seeing patients try to get clinic appointments and get medications dispensed in advance because they knew that they would have to cover these costs,” Bakhache said.signed by over 1,000 doctors, medical students, midwives and nurses to Premier Doug Ford and former health minister Christine Elliot in December 2020 outlining the economic and social benefits of universal coverage.
