It’s beginning to look a lot like - 2019?
Southwest Airlines will resume two nonstop flights from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport in September.That was the busiest year on record for Thanksgiving weekend air travel in the U.S., according to AAA, and Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport believes it is prepared for its largest rush of passengers since the COVID-imposed slowdown.
Early Wednesday, the increase in holiday traffic at the Birmingham airport was apparent. At 4:15 a.m. lines for the TSA area were overflowing into the airline ticket counter areas. That’s nearly 99% of the 2019 volume. In addition, the Transportation Security Administration says it could screen as many as 2.5 million passengers at checkpoints nationwide today, and may go beyond that number on Sunday.
Kim Hunt, vice president of communications for the Birmingham Airport Authority, said BHM has seen a “steady flow of traffic over the last three days” and there’s every reason to believe those numbers will improve in the coming new year.
