A Birmingham man is facing numerous charges after police say he kidnapped his infant daughter after firing shots into the baby’s mother’s Vestavia Hills apartment earlier this week.

Police responded at 6:20 p.m. Sunday to Grand Highland of Vestavia HillsOnce officers arrived, they determined that McCandless – who does not have custody of the child – shot into the apartment before entering and taking the child, police said.McCandless was taken into custody Sunday night and was held in the Vestavia Hills City Jail until warrants were obtained on Tuesday. He is being transferred to the Jefferson County Jail where he will be held without bond.

Court records show the child’s mother in June successfully filed for a protection from abuse order against McCandless, claiming he had been emotionally, verbally, and physically abusive.“You won’t be the one walking away,’’ she said he told her.
