A new bill would make it easier for consumers to move their data, such as their list of contacts, from one platform to another
The proposal Tuesday adds to a long list of bills seeking to respond to the growth of large online platforms such as Facebook Inc. Prospects for passage are clouded, however, with lawmakers mired in debates over impeachment and other issues.
Mr. Warner likened the proposals to a requirement that phone companies let users keep their phone number when they switch services. “We believe people should be able to move their data from one service or app to another,” Facebook said in a statement attributed to Kevin Martin, its vice president of U.S. public policy. Twitter declined to comment, and Google didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
