In his latest column, LATimesSkelton takes on single-issue voters, and a bill that would tighten the requirement that children be vaccinated against contagious diseases before entering school.

State Sen. Richard Pan is sponsoring a bill to give state public health officials rather than doctors the power to decide which children can skip their shots.

They’re like single-issue voters tied to other controversial topics, such as gun rights, abortion rights, animal rights and, increasingly, single-payer healthcare. The bill, SB 276, would require the state health department to review all applications for medical exemptions. The state would approve or reject them. It would create a standard application form. And exemptions would go into a state database.

“I’d talk to legislators and tell them the problem with not having more children vaccinated,” Pan says, “and they’d tell me, ‘This is my problem….’
