“That’s on me,” Popovich said. “When I think we’re starting to improve on it, we go back two steps. That’s something I’m going to have to think about and figure out how to motivate them better.”All the coaching, forward Doug McDermott said, cannot be solely left up to the coaches. “We want to finish the year strong,” McDermott said. “We know it’s about developing these young guys. At the same time, we have to create winning habits. That starts with us vets holding guys more accountable.”
McDermott’s name came up in trade conversations around the deadline, but his contract — with $13.7 million on the books for next season as well — proved difficult to move.The Spurs were able to deal Jakob Poeltl, the team’s longest-tenured player, and 29-year-old Josh Richardson. The team added to its stockpile of future draft assets in the deals, but also created something of a leadership vacuum with this year’s bunch.“Our veterans helped us when we were younger,” Dieng said.
In January, the team needed to clear roster space to complete a minor trade with Boston involving Noah Vonleh and cash. Dieng was waived to accomplish this.When the second expired, the Spurs inked Dieng to a deal for the remainder of the season.
