's administration is set to propose a new rule setting up millions more U.S. workers eligible for overtime pay under the Fair Labor and Standards Act.

"For over 80 years, a cornerstone of workers' rights in this country is the right to a 40-hour workweek, the promise that you get to go home after 40 hours or you get higher pay for each extra hour that you spend laboring away from your loved ones," Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su said in a statement DOL officials provided to.

U.S. President Joe Biden talks to reporters as he departs the White House for the Memorial Day holiday weekend on May 26, 2023, in Washington, D.C. A new rule could require the Department of Labor to require employers to pay time-and-a-half to salaried workers making less than $55,000 a year.

In addition to the threshold increase, the proposed rule will also include automatic increases to the salary level each year, a significant shift from the standing policy.
