Talks between Biden and Xi come at a time of major tensions between the U.S. and China.
U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday said that the U.S and China must ensure competition between the two nations “does not veer into conflict” in his opening remarks during a virtual meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, in a crucial summit that takes place at a time of growing tensions between the two world powers....
China’s leader Xi Jinping greeted Biden as his “old friend” while also striking a friendly tone and noting that the two countries should work together. Biden also noted that the two leaders have “spent an awful lot of time talking to each other” when he was vice president and Xi was a rising force in the Chinese Communist Party.
In the meeting, Biden was joined in the White House’s Roosevelt Room by Secretary of State Antony Blinken and a group of aides while Xi was joined by the Director of the Communist Party, Ding Xuexiang, and other aides.“I stand ready to work with you, Mr. President, to build consensus, take active steps and move China-U.S. relations forward in a positive direction,” Xi told Biden in his address.
