President, in Tel Aviv, also announces $100 million for Gaza, West Bank
President Joe Biden on Wednesday said he would ask Congress for an “unprecedented support package” for Israel’s defense, as he pledged solidarity with the country as it battles Hamas.
Speaking in Tel Aviv, Biden did not offer details, but said the Iron Dome air-defense system used by Israel would be kept “fully supplied.” Biden is reportedly weighing a wide-ranging funding request for about $100 billion that would include funding for Israel as well as Ukraine, border security and aid to other nations.
The president, while saying there was “no excusing” Hamas’ attack on Israel, also emphasized that the “vast majority” of Palestinians are not related to the group.More than 1,400 Israelis have died since the Hamas assault began, according to Wall Street Journal reporting. Israel said 289 of its soldiers have been killed. In Gaza, officials said the Palestinian death toll was about 3,000 before a blast at a hospital on Tuesday.
