The government will replace its federal fleet of 600,000 vehicles with electric models, and will upgrade efficiency in 300,000 federal buildings.

Wednesday that aims to cut the federal government’s carbon emissions by 65% by the end of the decade, and lays out goals to become carbon neutral by 2050.

The government plans to replace its fleet of 600,000 vehicles with electric models, and will upgrade efficiency at 300,000 federal buildings and change how it buys electricity over the next two and a half decades,Under the order, the federal government pledged to stop buying gas-powered passenger vehicles by 2027, and plans to purchase only zero-emission vehicles by 2035.

All buildings owned or leased by the federal government will no longer contribute carbon emissions by 2045, according to Biden’s order. Biden directed federal operations to run entirely on carbon-free electricity and develop 10 gigawatts of new clean electricity production by 2030. The order also establishes a “Buy Clean” policy, which directs the government to use lower-emissions construction materials.
