Sheriff Javier Salazar said his office has drafted a policy that details exactly what steps a deputy would take if they suspected a person of being.
While Senate Bill 4 remains on hold, local law enforcement agencies are deciding how their officers will respond if the law survives a federal court challenge and goes into effect. The law would empower Texas law enforcement officers to arrest and deport migrants. If a police officer believes a person is not a U.S. citizen or entered the country illegally, they could be detained and charged with a class B misdemeanor punishable up to six months in jail.
Latest on Texas law SB4 as 5th Circuit Court of Appeals holds oral arguments Salazar, a Democrat, said he opposed SB 4. “If they break another law, that’s something totally different — but just solely based on immigration issues, the federal law lays out that we don’t have the authority to do that,” Salazar said. The San Antonio Police Department said it did not plan to make any dramatic changes to its policies if SB4 goes into effect.
